AHADEETH OF RASOOLULLAH (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)

The best fast after Ramadaan is the fast of Muharram, the month of Allah. I have faith in Allah that fasting on the tenth of Muharram (The Day of Ashoora) will bring forgiveness for the sins of the past year. He who spends lavishly on his family on the day of Aashoora, Allah will increase his rizq for the rest of the year.

Some Muslims believe that Muharram is a month of mourning, hence they adopt a special type of dress to indicate that they are in mourning, and they believe that no happy functions, like weddings, for example, is permissible in this month. This false belief stems from the martyrdom of Hazrat Husain (radhiyallahu anhu) that occurred in this month. The truth is that Muharram was a sacred month long before the death of Hazrat Husain. In fact, it was sacred since the inception of time in this world. Allah Ta-Aala says in Surah Taubah, verse 36: Surely the number of months according to Allah is twelve (in a year), so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred; that is the straight religion. So wrong not yourselves therein... Rasoolullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) explained these four months by stating: "Three of them are consecutive, i.e, Zhul-Qa’dah, Zhul-Hijjah, and Muharram. The fourth being Rajab." This verse proves that Muharram featured among the sacred months since the heavens and earth were made.
