VIRTUES OF THE OLIVE A lmighty Allah describes the olive tree as a tree of barkah (blessing) (Surah Noor, verse 35)Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Cook your food in olive oil and use its oil (on the body) for indeed it is from a blessed tree.” Abu Usaid (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Eat olives and apply its oil, for it is of a blessed tree.” In one hadith The Messenger of Allah (alayhi salaam) advised that olive oil be used in the nose for medicinal purposes as well. Many medicinal and healing qualities have been mentioned by Ulema of the past. A good book on this subject is Tibbe-Nabawi by Allama Ibnul Qayyim Jowzi (RA). This Arabic book is available in English as well. In it several virtues of the olive and its oil are mentioned. Recent findings are that eating olives and drinking its oil is a protection against, and even a cure for heart disease. It helps in digestion and works as a mild laxative. Drinking the oil for long periods is good for the skin and keeps it fresh and young. |
