A Brief account of the life of Maseehul-Ummat Hazrat Moulana Shah Muhammad Maseehullah Khan Sherwani (rahmatullah alayhi)

NAME: Muhammad Maseehullah
FATHER'S NAME: Ahmed Sa'eed Khan
TITLE: Maseehul-Ummat
DATE OF BIRTH: 1329 AH. corresponding to 1911
BIRTHPLACE: Barlah, Aligarh (North India)
LINEAGE: Sherwani Pathan

CHILDHOOD

Hazrat was handsome in appearance and beautiful in character. Besides the five daily salah, Hazrat regularly observed Tahajjud salah and zikr, and would engage in dua for lengthy periods. He used to observe nafl fast in abundance. The company of the pious was always his cherished occupation.

He always studied Mawaa-ize Ashrafiyya (an anthology of Hazrat Thanwi's lectures) and the Bahishti Zewar. All family members and residents of his village had great respect for him. Due to his immaculate and pure way of life he had become everyone's favourite. All those who witnessed his childhood have attested to the fact that he was a born Wali (saint). Since childhood he was the manifestation of such noble attributes as modesty and respect, dignity and tolerance, intelligence and sharp-wittedness. The work of propagating Deen was also begun during his childhood, whilst even at this tender age he had become used to physical exercise, training on a variety of weapons, horse-riding, marksmanship and abstemiousness in eating, all with the intention of jihaad.

SCHOOLING AND DEENI EDUCATION

Hazrat obtained his schooling from primary level to junior high, in the City High School of Aligarh. Due to his constant reading of the Bahishti Ze'war and Mawaa-izhe Ashrafiyya Hazrat became greatly inclined towards Deeni education from a tender age. As a result, Hazrat discontinued his schooling and began full-time study of Deen in Aligarh. After completing some elementary books on Arabic, Qiraat, Fiqah, etc. in his hometown, he then went for higher studies to Darul Uloom, Deoband. There, after two years of study, he finished daura hadeefh Shareef, (This refers to the final year of the Alim Fazil course during which the famous works of hadith are studied, such as Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmizhi, and so forth.) but spent another two years doing postgraduate studies, which entailed the study of certain special subjects. (There are set works in Arabic on philosophy, logic, astronomy, etc, which are taught as special courses after the completion of the Alim course.) In total Hazrat spent 4 years in Darul Uloom, Deoband.

Stories of pious ladies — From Bahisti Zewar

The second wife of Ismail (alayhis salam)

Prior to building the Ka'bah, Ibrahim (alayhis salam) had come to Makkah on two occasions. However, on both occasions he did not find Ismail (alayhis salam) at home. Neither was he (Ibrahim alayhis salam) commanded to stay over in Makkah for very long (whereby he could have met his son). When he came to Makkah on the first of such occasions, the wife of Ismail (alayhis salam) was at home. He asked her how she was managing. She replied: "I am in great difficulty." He replied: "When your husband returns, convey my salam to him and tell him to change his door-frame." When Ismail (alayhis salam) returned home and learnt everything, he replied: "That was my father and the door-frame that he was referring to is actually you. He wants me to leave you." He therefore divorced her and married another woman.

When Ibrahim (alayhis salam) came a second time, he met the second wife of his son. She welcomed him and was very hospitable to him. He also asked her how she was managing. She replied: "Thanks to Allah, I am experiencing a lot of comfort." He made du'a for her and said to her: "When your husband returns home, convey my salam to him and tell him to maintain his door-frame." When Ismail (alayhis salam) returned home, he was informed of what transpired. He remarked: "That was my father. He asked me to keep you with me."

Lesson: See the consequences of being ungrateful. One prophet became displeased with her, while the other prophet divorced her. The fruit of gratitude and patience was that one prophet made du'â for her and she was blessed with the opportunity of staying in the company of another prophet. O women! Don't ever be ungrateful. You must exercise patience and express gratitude irrespective of the situation in which you are.
