A Brief account of the life of Maseehul-Ummat Hazrat Moulana Shah Muhammad Maseehullah Khan Sherwani (rahmatullah alayhi)

Continuing our brief account of the life of Maseehul-Ummat Hazrat Moulana Shah Muhammad Maseehullah (rahmatullah alayhi)

KHILAFAT(VICEREGENCY)

After graduating from Darul Uloom (in the year 1351 AH) Hazrat spent his Shabaan and Ramadaan, as usual, in the Khanqah Imdaadiyyah, and then left for home. On Tuesday 25th Shawwaal 1351, corresponding to 21 February 1933, Hazrat was a guest at the home of an administrative official in the district of Muthra, when a letter from Hazrat Thanwi arrived bearing the following notification: “I hereby grant you permission to accept the bay’at from people, and to spiritually train and instruct mureeds.” (Such permission is called khilaafat.)

During his last illness Hazrat Thanwi rahmatullahi alaihi had published a list bearing the names of eleven of his very special khulafa (spiritual deputies). This list was endorsed by Hazrat Thanwi himself, in the following caption: “I have complete confidence in their teaching and spiritual administration. Whoever wishes to establish spiritual contact with anyone of them, may do so without hesitation.” On this list the honourable name of Hazrat Wala also appeared. Whenever Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Eesa sahib Allahabadi and Hazrat Maseehul-Ummat both happened to be residing in the khanqah at one and the same time, Hazrat Thanwi would express his delight in the following words: “Presently we have with us the two Maseehs!” Once he also remarked: "Eesa and Maseeh have surpassed everyone.”

Once, in a public jalsa (graduation ceremony) of the madresa Miftahul Uloom in Jalalabad, Hazrat Thanwi made the following statement: “There is something in my heart which I wish to mention, so why not here in this public gathering. I say openly and in front of all: I love Molvi Maseehullah very much!” Hazrat Thanwi also said: “His (Hazrat Maseehul-Ummat’s) spiritual instruction is very methodical.”

RESIDENCE IN THANABAWAN

The period between receiving khilafat and being entrusted with the responsibilities of the madresa in Jalalabad, was spent by Hazrat residing with his family in Thanabawan, in close proximity to his beloved Shaikh. For six years he achieved abundant spiritual benefit, learnt to understand the nature of Hazrat Thanwi, and became the beloved of his shaikh.

MARRIAGE

During the lifetime of Hazrat Thanwi rahmatullahi alaihi Hazrat Maseehul-Ummat had two marriages. From the first marriage, which was performed at a young age, Hazrat had only male offspring. During his six-year residence in Thanabawan, his wife and children remained with him. However, this wife, along with the children, passed away within a short while. Thereafter Hazrat remarried, and the second noble wife became commonly known as “Ammijaan”. Ammijaan passed away in 1395 A.H. (1975) after a lengthy illness. Hazrat rendered remarkable service to his wife during this illness. Conveying the news of her demise, Hazrat wrote the following in one of his letters to Hazrat Haji farouq sahib (RA):

“That grateful, pious, generous and God-conscious lady has returned to the abode from which she had come.”

Local Ulema and Masha-aikh came to the home of this humble servant (in Pakistan) to offer their condolences on the death of Ammijaan, which I duly conveyed to Hazrat via letter.

TEACHING AND PRINCIPALSHIP

In the year 1351 A.H. (1932) Hazrat Thanwi rahmatullahi alaihi laid the foundation stone for the erection of the Madresa Miftahul Uloom in the historic village of Jalalabad which is situated about five kilometres from Thanabawan. Hazrat Thanwi was, therefore, the founder and patron of this madresa. Up to the year 1357 A.H the madresa had not progressed satisfactorily, which prompted Hazrat Thanwi to officially appoint Hazrat Maseehul Ummat as the principal and senior teacher of the madresa, a post which Hazrat Wala fulfilled with tremendous success in spite of the meagre resources at his disposal. This was in Shawwaal, 1357 (December 1938).

In the still incomplete structure which was the madresa, along with the hifz course, Hazrat gradually advanced the Nizhaami syllabus (i. e. the Alim course) from the elementary stages right up to the penultimate year of the Alim Fazil course (i.e. one year before Daura or Bukhari Shareef). For a while he sent his students to complete their daura hadith (final year) by Hazrat Moulana Madani rahmatullahi alaihi (in Deoband).
